Villa Paula: Miami’s Most Haunted House in Little Haiti

Hidden in Little Haiti, Villa Paula is a historic Miami house known for ghost stories. Built in the 1920s as Miami’s first Cuban consulate, this grand home is not just beautiful—it is also one of the most haunted places in the city.

People have reported strange things, like the smell of fresh coffee when no one is around and ghostly figures walking the halls.

Villa Paula, located in Little Haiti, is known as Miami’s most haunted house. Built in 1926, it was originally the first Cuban consulate in the city. Over the years, visitors and residents have reported eerie encounters inside its historic walls.

Strange and Unexplained Events

Fashion designer Fernando Garcia, who once rented Villa Paula, shared a terrifying experience. One day, as he sat at his desk, a windowpane fell behind him. When he got up to check, a heavy 40-pound piece of plaster crashed down onto the exact spot where he had been sitting. “If I hadn’t moved, I would be dead,” he said.

Many believe the mansion is home to at least five ghosts, with the most famous being Paula Milord, the wife of Cuban consul Domingo Milord. Paula died in 1932 after complications from a leg amputation. Some say she still roams the house, even though she was actually buried elsewhere.

Another spirit is said to be a baby—the illegitimate child of a house servant—whose mother also wanders the mansion, searching for the child’s grave.

Ghost Sightings and Paranormal Investigations

Today, Villa Paula operates as an art gallery. While some artists working there claim they’ve never felt anything strange, paranormal investigators and psychics have had eerie experiences.

  • A psychic medium once visited and said Paula’s spirit had a message: “I love what you’ve done to the place.”
  • Multiple investigations have been drawn to the bathroom, where some believe the baby passed away.
  • Visitors have reported hearing music, smelling roses and coffee (Paula’s favorites), and seeing shadowy figures.

A Haunted Past That Won’t Fade

In 1976, a seance was held in the mansion, revealing not just Paula’s presence but four other spirits:

  1. A thin man in a top hat.
  2. A heavy-set woman in a red dress.
  3. A crying woman searching for a lost medal in the garden.
  4. A young woman desperately looking for her baby’s burial site.

After the seance, the ghostly activity reportedly calmed down for a few years. However, by the 1980s, the hauntings returned—loud noises, objects moving, and ghost sightings became common again. Even the house’s gates were said to be responsible for the mysterious deaths of cats.

By 1989, The Miami Herald officially named Villa Paula Miami’s most haunted house. In the 1990s, the mansion became a doctor’s office, and while it remains well-maintained, many believe its ghosts are still active—especially at night.

Would You Visit Villa Paula?

Some say the spirits are harmless, while others claim to have had chilling encounters. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, Villa Paula remains one of Miami’s most mysterious places. Would you dare to step inside?
